The numbers are in…cue the drum roll…Here are the top 10 Yoga Health Coaching posts of 2017. The best blogs of the year featured personal tips to help you dial in your habits and professional advice for coaches to better support their clients.

Top YHC blogs shared personal advice on everything from your morning coffee, to potty talk, to eye exercises when you’ve been at the computer far too long. In 2017, blogger, Alexandra Epple’s popular topics included deep dives into intermittent fasting and advice for menopause.

And for the yoga teachers and wellness coaches make sure to check out the blogs, ‘7 habits and 10 Tips to Grow Your Wellness Career and Your Yoga Values.’ Or get a great idea for a 2018 workshop by reading, ‘The Ayurvedic Clock,’ by Yolanda de Cuevas.

Looking Back

It’s always fun to look back and see what progress you have made and to see what topics and trends caught your eye throughout the year. Reviewing the past years’ worth of blog posts has been a great snapshot for me. With 95 new posts this year from over 20 authors we have a lot to share.

It completely amazes me what great things our coaches have to share and the advice I learn just from reading along. As an editor we see all the behind the scenes drama, growth and potential and today is our one day to share that with you. Here’s the inside scoop from the editors on what amazes us most about the blog and writers;

  • I’m always amazed at the growth I see in our writers over a few short months. Even though the first blogs are great (and there are a couple in the top ten) within a couple months of simply sitting down to write everyone grows so much as a coach and writer. – Krista
  • I love seeing how a little bit of feedback turns a great blog into an awesome one. After working on just a few blogs, I can see a few little stumbling blocks unique to the blogger which, when addressed, transform it into a powerful piece. I love the process of collaborating with bloggers. I learn as much as my bloggers! (? who wrote this, not me, Elise, Is this from Kari?)
  • We’re all in our “heads” so much of the time as humans, as Yoga Health Coaches, as teachers, and as professional healers. I love helping bloggers get out of their own heads. When writers get out of the way, amazing content comes through with ease. The paradox is that it’s a challenge to get out of your own way when you blog. The results are bloggers can share their message in a way that others can understand. Then the big magic happens when the whole process takes on a life of its own, helping bloggers to grow as coaches and people. -Elise

How Far Have You Come?

Take a moment as you reflect back on the year to check out not only the top 10 posts, but all the amazing wisdom shared on this forum. I am constantly amazed by the ideas and inspiration our writers share with each post.

Reflect back on what was new to you and what habits are totally dialed in every day.

Think about what habits you need to uplevel this year and get inspired to uplevel your habits and take your clients on a deeper journey with you.

And now in order of popularity online and on social media, here are our top ten blogs for our second year of publication…

Top 10 Yoga Health Coaching Posts This Year

1. 7 Habits of Highly Ineffective Yoga Teachers, By Andrea Catherine

Hat-tip to Stephen R. Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Here is my list of habits that I aspire to avoid as a yoga teacher. I’ve done them all! If you are a yoga teacher you likely have, too. If not, share your secrets.

 2. Overweight Vata, By Cate Stillman

A majority of Western society is overweight. As a practitioner and/or student of ayurveda, it is difficult to assess whether excess weight is a vata or kapha issue. Cate shares her advice on how to tell the difference between vata weight and kapha weight as well as how vatas can work to bring balance (and weight loss) into their lives. Self massage, sipping warm water, even chewing gum are some of the habits Cate explains in this episode.

3. Bulletproof Coffee, Rocket Fuel Lattes, Ayurveda and Me, By Krista Strayer

There’s a new coffee craze sweeping the globe, especially among those who call themselves healthy. I would call myself healthy but at the same time I’m always coming up with a new justification for indulging in what I know is not good for me.

And before you think I’m judging – oh no! I freely admit to being addicted to my morning cup of brew. Ok, maybe not freely – admitting to drinking coffee is like coming out of the closet in Ayurvedic circles. I love the way it fulfills my need for a bitter taste and I love it even more for all the productivity I get from drinking it. Will this new craze let me enjoy it guilt free?

4. Intermittent Fasting: Go Without, Expand Within – By Alexandra Epple

Intermittent fasting has been a trendy subject lately. Yeah, detoxes and fasts in general have been on people’s minds for many years, but intermittent fasting seems to be the trend. What is it? Why would you want to do it? And what should you be fasting on are the central questions.

5. The Upside of Menopause, By Alexandra Epple

It was my birthday the other day. I turned 43. Not a bad number other than that it makes me realize that I am approaching menopause and midlife. I am not panicked really, but I am surely curious about what that means for my life and my body.

6. Are you a Pooping Machine? – By Yolanda De Cuevas

Can you taste the difference between your mother’s signature dish and the same dish prepared by someone else? Remember that you are not a machine. You have a mind, emotions and a spirit. How are you integrating the more subtle parts of yourself into your meals. Read on for how a visit to the art gallery inspired a new healthy take on digestion.

7.  9 Eye Exercises to Soothe Tired Eyes After a Long Day at the Computer, By Mary Sullivan

Do your eyes feel fatigue or strain at the end of a long day at the computer?  Or do you feel it after a long day in the strong sunshine at the beach? Add self-care to revitalize and to soothe tired eyes.

Tune into the video for a conversation on how our current habits mistreat how our eyes were developed and how these simple activities below can help bring balance back the eyes.

8. How to Treat a Problem with Peristalsis, By Alexandra Epple

The other day I was challenged. Challenged to take my knowledge deeper. It can be so agonizing. You know what I mean? And then so fulfilling too.

I was mentoring the pro healers on a call for the Living Ayurveda course. We talked about the vata subdoshas aka vayus. I got into a ‘disagreement’ with one of the students about which subdosha relates to peristalsis. She insisted on Samana, I pounded on Apana. Read on to see which coach was right…

9. The Ayurvedic Clock – Are You at War with Time?, By Yolanda DeCuevas

We expect our bodies to accrue energy and weather decades of debt resulting from failure to give our bodies the time to “repair and restore” at night. Each night we demand that our bodies focus on digesting a large rich meal instead of working on housekeeping tasks such as removing toxins and repairing damaged cells. The following morning we feel tired on waking, our sleep has not been deep and restful as our body has not been focused on restoring optimal functioning. We have been withdrawing from our body’s health account overnight, instead of adding credit by allowing important repair work to take place. This simple activity is a genius idea to help break the ice in a workshop to bring the focus on where we are fighting our natural time clock.

10. My Best 10 Career Tips to Grow Your Wellness Practice, By Cate Stillman

“Imagine if you as who you are today could have whispered something to yourself during your own graduation ceremony, what would that have been?” These top 10 tips for establishing your wellness career are the secret whispers of your future self. Check these out for the shortcut to learning how best to serve those that need to hear your message.

Presence Yourself: Become a More Effective Yoga Teacher https://yogahealthcoaching.com/presence-yourself-become-a-more-effective-yoga-teacher/ https://yogahealthcoaching.com/presence-yourself-become-a-more-effective-yoga-teacher/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2017 12:53:05 +0000 https://healthcoaching.wpengine.com/?p=18938

Hello Changemakers! Carly Banks is here today with Andrea Catherine. Andrea is a fellow Yoga Health Coach who just wrote an awesome blog on the Yoga Health Coaching website. It’s called “The 7 Habits of Highly Ineffective Yoga Teachers,” which is maybe the best title I’ve ever heard. And it’s got huge traction: it’s in the top ten most read blog posts on the Yoga Health Coaching website!

So tune in to here about Andrea’s journey as a Yoga Health Coach, her newest blog post and its inspiration, and how she found her voice through blogging, storytelling, and podcasting.

What you’ll get out of tuning in:

  • How Yoga Health Coaching provides tried and true business structure
  • What to do (and what not to do!) to be a more effective Yoga Teacher
  • How to find your voice through blogging with YHC

Links:

Show Highlights:

  • 3:15 – While many wellness coaches have experimented with different program structures, Yoga Health Coaching provides the structure that seems to work the best for most coaches and their clients.
  • 4:45 – To be a more effective yoga teacher, limit the amount of time you have with your back to your students by inviting them to watch you if you need to demonstrate something. When your students are practicing poses, make sure you have your eyes on them to make sure they are practicing safely.
  • 5:50 – As a yoga teacher, connecting with your students is one of the most important aspects of the practice, so it is essential to create an environment of calm, peace, and ease.
  • 6:10 – Showing up to the mat having already done your practice will help you be present in your body and present for your students.
  • 12:00 – Practicing the habits of Ayurveda are a way to practice self-love, no matter where we are on our journey.

Favorite Quotes:

  • “I always start class by asking the students how I can meet them where they are.” – Andrea Catherine
  • “When I go to a class, and I leave wowed, these are the things the teacher did to make the experience so much more powerful.” – Andrea Catherine
  • “We connect with story. It’s powerful.” – Andrea Catherine
  • “We can love ourselves where we are, even if we’re not in that place we want to be.” – Andrea Catherine
  • “We make the decision to do these things for our health from a place of self-love.” – Carly Banks

Andrea Catherine’s Fearless Self-Love: The Art of a Great Podcast https://yogahealthcoaching.com/fearless-self-love-great-podcast/ https://yogahealthcoaching.com/fearless-self-love-great-podcast/#respond Fri, 03 Nov 2017 13:56:24 +0000 https://healthcoaching.wpengine.com/?p=18717 In this episode, Cate gives Andrea Bachman, one of the Top 3 YHC Bloggers, a platform to gain insight into growing her wellness business and ask Cate some of her most pressing questions:

  1. How can I build my podcast as an effective & sustainable wide mouth opening to my acculturation funnel?
  2. What are some specific ways I can maximize my skills as a writer, speaker and podcaster to reach more potential clients?
  3. What are the most effective ways for retaining new list members and potential clients?

Check out how Andrea’s questions are answered, and how you too can gain the practical tools and insight Cate provides for creating your own podcast and growing your community!

What you’ll get out of tuning in:

  • How to leverage your strengths to make your podcast a success
  • What questions to ask yourself before you create your podcast
  • How to get rid of market competition by creating in your zone of genius

Links Mentioned in the Episode:

Show Highlights:

  • 37:10 – There are many different archetypes for a podcast, all of which have their own unique strengths. Some of the most common include Artist, Teacher, Educator, Conversationalist, Newscaster, and Storyteller. Leverage the skills you already have in order to make your podcast a success.
  • 42:20 – When launching and developing a podcast, you don’t need to stick to a set amount of publications at first. If it is more involved, more artistic, you may be able to publish less because your it has more staying power than that of a newscaster.
  • 45:00 – If you are already performing in your daily life, whether that’s through song, poetry, theatre, interviews, or professional talks, record it! You can use that as one of your publications, and get two uses out of one production.
  • 46:00 – Ask yourself who your podcast is for, what you want to create for your audience, and how it will serve them, and develop from there.
  • 50:00 – One of the challenges with podcasts is getting people into the conversation with you. You can incentivize people to reach out to you in different ways, like giving them a shout out on the show or providing forums for questions or feedback.

Favorite Quotes:

  • “What doesn’t feel like work? Use that as the metric.” – Cate Stillman
  • “Who’s the listener? What do I want to create for them? How will this serve them?” – Cate Stillman
  • “If you reshape marketing into nurturance… thinking about it in that way makes it more accessible and pushes what’s important.” – Andrea Bachman
  • “When you’re in your zone of genius, there’s no market competition… you’re creating your own market.” – Cate Stillman

Top 10 Yoga Health Coaching Blogs This Year https://yogahealthcoaching.com/top-10-yoga-health-coaching-blogs-this-year/ https://yogahealthcoaching.com/top-10-yoga-health-coaching-blogs-this-year/#respond Thu, 24 Aug 2017 15:35:32 +0000 https://healthcoaching.wpengine.com/?p=18209 Happy Birthday Yoga Health Coaching Blog! Our blog is one year old today.

Our planning for the blog began in the spring of 2016 at the Yogahealer retreat in Driggs, Idaho. From that vision, we have grown into a team of editors and bloggers and now into an instructional program that leads a group of dedicated bloggers who communicate on the topics of interest to Yoga Health Coaches, our clients, and others in the Health Coaching industry.

Our blog continues to grow, daily, weekly and monthly. We are proud to be a part of the Yogahealer brand founded by Cate Stillman.

B- Equals Perfection

As an editor and a writer for the blog, I have been most inspired by Cate’s ‘mantra,’ “All you need is a B-,” or something like that… I come from a long line of nutty professors who try to do things either perfectly or very, very imperfectly.

I have learned from Cate to embrace the middle way as a writer and an editor.  There may be some grammatical errors in a blog that slip by or some paragraphs don’t make perfect sense in something I write, yet I have a clarity that progress trumps perfection.

The Yoga Health Coaching Blog continues to move forward and no one is judging. As an individual blogger, I have found that writing at a B- actually improves my writing and helps me think more clearly, rather than less clearly. The B- may even be the key to getting rid of writer’s block. The key is to keep moving forward, and perfection makes us stop in our tracks.

You could say that writing a B- IS perfection – it keeps the flow and motion of the blog continuing. Writing a B- blog helps us take baby steps, rather than impossible and implausible leaps that would really frankly never happen.

Growing a Blog

We are more like a tree growing naturally and imperfectly, setting down our roots and spreading our branches. The beauty is in the big picture expression that is not always visible when you zoom in or look at the early stages.

As Yoga Health Coaching bloggers, we are taking a stand. We are writers and communicators intent on entering the stream of consciousness for positive change on the planet. We are adding our voices to the collective leadership on the planet. We are developing our voices as bloggers. And it has been fun and inspiring to lead such an awesome team along with co-editor Krista Strayer. We are growing tremendously and will soon be publishing the work of our largest team of bloggers ever, with the help of a new editor Kari Zable. We can’t wait to see what comes next with this group…

We are so proud that we have received recognition for our blog. Besides the incredible feedback we have received from Yoga Health Coaches, clients and yogis, Yoga Health Coaching even won an award!

We’re proud to be named number 30 in the top 100 Health Coaching Blogs on the Internet by blog aggregator Feedspot.com. We intend to become number one this year.

I will continue to help the writers and remind myself that getting a B- means showing up, taking baby steps and evolving our individual and collective voices in an ever evolving tapestry of expression and life that can be found on the internet.

And now in order of popularity online and on social media, here are our top ten blogs for our first year of publication…

Although she embraced a healthy lifestyle, she had difficulty sleeping and staying focused while she taught yoga, raised her son Krishna, filmed live music and wrote two books on holistic health, Chakra Tonics and An A-Z Guide to Healing Foods. Longing for sustainable systems that would allow her the energy and ability to follow her passions, she found Yoga Health Coaching, a system she now shares with students and clients. Her specialty is helping people to listen to their bodies to create foundational health habits that enable them to live like rock stars who get to bed ‘early’ most nights.

What you’ll get out of tuning in

Show Highlights

  • 1:48 — Practicing whole body listening, instead of  the cognitive listening we learned is school, is what gives us access to “embodying the truth of someone else’s experience.”
  • 6:20 — Manage your struggle with interrupting, or feeling like you’ll lose your thought if you don’t say it now, by jotting a few words to come back to and make the conversation more interesting for your listeners.
  • 8:42 — Collaborative Intelligence (authors Dawna Markova and Angie McArthur) helps us understand how differently individual listeners will engage in our podcast. Will they be highly focused, gather about ⅓ of what we share while doing something else, or be completely zoned out?
  • 14:35 — Take care of all three doshas and listening types in your podcast by including shownotes, guiding simple breath body practice, and having on point conversation.
  • 22:42 — If you agree that podcasting conversations are all about resonance, consider that resonance is more likely to occur in a two-way conversation than interview style podcast when folks are not trying to vie for position.

Favorite Quotes:

  • ”If we’re on a fast growth learning track, we really want to leverage the learning of others.”
  • “Some [listeners] are super focused, some people are literally sorting their mail, some are totally zoned out.”
  • “Biking for me is work. I’m actually working on Yoga Healer when I go biking. That’s when the biggest ‘aha!’ moments come.”
  • “Vatas need a lot of inspiration…kaphas…need some motivation…Both need to feel they’re part of something that will help create a container for their growth or transformation. A pitta person…need(s) a lot of really good pointed conversation.”
  • “When you create audio material, where people are not distracted by the visual field, they’re just receiving the vibration, it’s either a hit or a miss, it’s either a yes or a no.”
  • “You can more or less ask me anything and I’ll be like, ‘oh yea, sure, we’ve done self-massage together.’”
